Paris police arrested a man who parachuted from the Eiffel Tower on Thursday, according to the BFM TV channel. The channel, part of the CNN network, reported that the man climbed a column of the famous Eiffel Tower before jumping with a parachute. The organization that manages the tower stated that "security discovered the man in less than a minute after he entered the site, but attempts to dissuade him from jumping were unsuccessful." According to BFM TV, the man landed on the roof of a nearby sports center before being arrested by the police, noting that the opening of the tower was "slightly delayed on Thursday morning" due to the incident.
Additionally, last Monday, the opening of the Eiffel Tower was delayed after security officials found American tourists sleeping in the monument. Last Saturday, a security alarm due to bomb concerns led to the evacuation of three floors of the tower for several hours before it was lifted with nothing found. The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in the world, built between 1887 and 1889 to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution, and stands at 1,083 feet tall, welcoming about 7 million visitors annually.
