Accidental Goal Leads Belgium to the Top of Their Group in European Championship Qualifiers

Yannick Carrasco scored an accidental goal in Belgium's 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan, placing them at the top of Group F in the qualifiers for the UEFA Euro 2024 football championship, overcoming poor pitch conditions and high temperatures on Saturday. Belgium leads the group with ten points from four matches, ahead of Austria on goal difference. Belgium started the match with an attacking performance, with Leandro Trossard hitting the woodwork after a pass from Romelu Lukaku, who has only played 20 minutes with his club this season, before the pace of the game slowed and chances decreased in the first half.

Belgium managed to score by chance when Johan Bakayoko shot from distance, and the ball deflected off teammate Carrasco’s foot, changing direction towards the goal in the 38th minute. Jeremy Doku, who recently joined Manchester City, almost doubled the score near the end after coming on as a substitute. Belgium played the match without their starting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne due to long-term injuries.
