New Violence in India's Manipur… Three People Killed

Indian police officials reported late last Friday that three people were killed and homes were burned in new violence incidents in the northeastern state of Manipur, as sporadic violence and killings continue. A police spokesperson stated that the three individuals who were killed on Thursday evening belong to the Meitei ethnic group in the Bishnupur area of the state. The ongoing violence, which has lasted for months, erupted on May 3 after a court ordered the state to consider expanding special economic benefits and increasing quotas for government jobs and educational institutions for the majority Meitei group, which were previously designated for the Kuki tribe. More than 180 people have died, and thousands have fled their homes since the outbreak of violence in Manipur, which has a population of 3.2 million and is located on the border with Myanmar.
