James Johnson, the president of Football Australia, believes that "expanding the Club World Cup will be a huge success." He is contemplating a joint bid with New Zealand to host the second edition in 2029. Australia and New Zealand will jointly host the Women's World Cup in July and August of this year, and Johnson has indicated that this could be a starting point for a joint bid for the men's edition, possibly in 2034.
The first edition of the expanded Club World Cup, featuring 32 teams and championed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, will be held in the United States in 2025. Johnson, who worked under Infantino at FIFA until 2018, told the Sydney Morning Herald: "It will grow over the years. Gianni has really developed the Champions League at UEFA; he knows what it takes to do it. The day will come when we have the best clubs coming to our shores; that will be good for Australian football. This is something to look forward to, in addition to the men's World Cup - but that is after hosting the best Women's World Cup ever."
Saudi Arabia will host the last edition of the Club World Cup, which includes 7 clubs, later this year. The expanded version will take place every four years. The ninth edition of the Women's World Cup will kick off in Auckland and Sydney on July 20.
