The Tunisian film "Benat Alfa" directed by Kawther Ben Hania is participating in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival in its 76th edition, which will take place next May. The film's star, Hend Sabry, wrote on her Twitter account: "Proud and happy that the Tunisian film I'm part of is chosen for the official competition at Cannes, the most important competition in the world! The film is directed by Kawther Ben Hania and produced by Habib Attia and Nadim Sheikho. A beautiful and important day in the history of Arab cinema."
This is Kawther Ben Hania’s first time competing in the Cannes Festival after previously achieving a milestone for Tunisian cinema by making it to the final list for the Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film with "The Man Who Sold His Skin" in 2021.
In the "Un Certain Regard" section of Cannes, which runs from May 16 to 27, films by Arab directors from Sudan, Morocco, and Tunisia will be showcased. Sudanese director Mohamed Kordofani will participate with the film "Goodbye Julia," Moroccan director Asma El Mohandes with "White Lies," and Canadian-Tunisian director Mounia Akl with "Simply Sylvan."
