The United Arab Emirates and the Italian Republic announced the elevation of their relationship to a strategic partnership. This declaration came during a meeting held today, Saturday, between Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, at the Al Bahar Palace.
During the meeting, both sides announced a "Declaration of Intent" to enhance cooperation under the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change "COP 28" and on climate action. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on energy transition projects and sustainability initiatives between "ADNOC" and the Italian energy group Eni was also revealed. The memorandum aims to collaborate in the fields of emission reduction, new energies, and low-carbon solutions, contributing to the establishment of a long-term strategic partnership between the two companies, enhancing energy security, and accelerating low-carbon economic and industrial growth.
Areas of cooperation include carbon emission reduction, focusing on carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies, enhancing energy efficiency, joint investment in green hydrogen, as well as renewable and clean energy.
Both parties discussed several issues and recent developments on the regional and international fronts and exchanged perspectives on matters of mutual interest, emphasizing that dialogue, prioritizing diplomatic solutions, and cooperation are the ways to address various crises and enhance stability and security, ultimately achieving a better future for present and future generations. Both sides expressed their eagerness to cooperate to accelerate the development of bilateral relations, building on what has been achieved over the past years.
The President of the UAE affirmed that his country supports peace, cooperation, and resolving crises through dialogue and diplomatic channels, expressing readiness to cooperate with friendly Italy in this area and in all matters that contribute to stability and development both in the region and globally. For her part, the Italian Prime Minister affirmed her country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and joint work with the UAE in a manner that serves the interests of both nations and contributes to reinforcing the pillars of security and stability globally, noting the alignment of the two countries' visions on many issues of mutual concern, especially regarding peacefully resolving crises and conflicts through dialogue and negotiation. She stated that the UAE is an important partner for Italy at various levels.
