Russian news agency TASS reported today that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to discuss the grain export deal via Black Sea ports with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a visit to New York next week. Lavrov is scheduled to chair two meetings of the United Nations Security Council, as Russia holds the presidency of the council that includes 15 member states in April.
Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated: "Lavrov and most members of his delegation have received U.S. visas to travel to New York." He added, "No progress has been made, and efforts are being made, but unfortunately, they are not fruitful for us. We have clearly stated that we want to see progress."
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric remarked, "We are determined to fully implement this agreement, as we continue to work diligently on the other part of the package, which is to facilitate the export of Russian grains and fertilizers. The risks associated with this are very high."
The grain export agreement was renewed for 60 days last month, but Russia indicated that it may not agree to an extension unless the West lifts what it describes as obstacles to the export of Russian grains and fertilizers.
