Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fiad received the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mojtaba Amani, in the ministry, in the presence of officials from the Iranian embassy, as well as the Lebanese delegation tasked with visiting Iran soon. The discussion focused on the Iranian donation related to supplying Lebanon with oil derivatives necessary for operating electricity production plants in Lebanon, the objectives of the delegation's visit, and related details.
After the meeting, Fiad indicated that "this donation is welcomed, like all donations from brotherly and friendly countries, and it came as a result of an initiative by Mr. Hassan Nasrallah and a proposal by MP Gebran Bassil during a media meeting. The government, represented by Prime Minister Mikati, then received this initiative and met with President Nabih Berri, and they communicated by phone with the Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which gave this initiative a universal welcome at the political and national levels."
He added: "This initiative has strategic importance as it will provide a starting point for implementing the electricity plan set by the ministry, which received the approval of the Council of Ministers, followed by an emergency plan aimed at increasing supply hours in preparation for raising tariffs and securing the financial balance for Electricité du Liban to cover its future needs independently, while simultaneously providing electricity to citizens at a lower cost than private generators, thus putting the energy sector on the path of recovery and sustainable growth."
For his part, the Iranian ambassador indicated that "his country is ready to assist Lebanon not only in securing fuel but also in all matters related to the energy sector in general, particularly in building production stations in the medium term under BOT contracts and maintaining networks."
He also spoke about the existence of a political will within the Lebanese government, confirming his ongoing communication with officials to reach the desired outcomes, and emphasized that "this donation will serve all the people and hoped that it would mark the beginning of cooperation in all fields."
