UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday that "inadequate donations" will not address the severe impact resulting from the end of the agreement that allowed the safe export of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea for a year. Guterres stated, "It is clear that excluding millions of tons of grain from the market will lead to price increases." He added, "Therefore, we will not address this significant impact on everyone everywhere (by relying on) a small amount of donations that go to some countries."
While global wheat prices are around half of the record price reached in early March 2022 following the Russian invasion, Guterres says any increase now "will be paid for by everyone everywhere, particularly developing countries and the poor in middle-income countries and even advanced countries."
On another note, Guterres deemed July to be "the hottest month recorded ever," indicating that "the era of global warming has ended, and we have entered the era of global boiling."
