Egypt Announces New Negotiations with Ethiopia on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

The Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation announced today, Monday, the start of a new round of ministerial negotiations regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Cairo, involving delegations from Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The ministry indicated that the previous trilateral ministerial meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on September 23 and 24, did not yield significant progress. It stated that the concluded round of negotiations witnessed a regression from Ethiopia on several agreements previously reached among the three countries as part of the negotiation process. Notably, this new round of negotiations is a continuation of discussions that began in Cairo on August 27 and 28, following an agreement among the countries to expedite the completion of the agreement on the principles of filling and operating the GERD within four months, after meeting between the leaderships of Egypt and Ethiopia on June 13.
