Lewis Hamilton denied today, Thursday, that he is in negotiations to move to Ferrari, a competitor in the Formula 1 World Championship. He stated that he is close to reaching an agreement to extend his contract with Mercedes. Hamilton told reporters before the Monaco Grand Prix that his team is "working closely behind the scenes" with team principal Toto Wolff, and they are almost finished with contract negotiations. "I am in a much better position than I was before, with a team handling this for me because I remember doing all the negotiations myself and it was very stressful. I no longer have to do that."
In response to a question about whether Ferrari had reached out to him, Hamilton said, "No."
In a separate statement, Frederic Vasseur, head of Ferrari, said, "The team has not made any offer." Vasseur added, "We haven't entered into discussions. I think all the competing teams would love to have Hamilton on their side at some point. It would be nonsense not to say something like that."
Hamilton hopes that negotiations with Mercedes will be successful in the coming weeks.
