Another Storm Hits Central Greece

Heavy rain has fallen over central Greece, flooding streets, homes, and business premises in the city of Volos, just three weeks after the devastating storm Daniel, which claimed the lives of 16 people in a wider area of the country. The fire department reported that "authorities have evacuated over 250 people from the area since it was hit by storm Elias yesterday afternoon," adding that they have received around 1,200 calls for assistance so far. Intense rain accompanied the storm in Volos and its suburbs, causing water levels to rise rapidly within a few hours. The mayor of Volos stated, "The storm and flooding caused power outages yesterday, leaving 80 percent of the city in complete darkness." Authorities have closed roads to vehicle traffic.
