Social media pages and accounts circulated an image claimed to show Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, walking around in the Gaza Strip in recent hours or days amid devastating Israeli bombardments and fierce street fighting since Hamas's surprise attack on October 7. However, examination and investigation revealed that this claim is incorrect, and that the image has been published since at least 2014, according to the fact-checking service from "AFP." The image was first posted on November 14, 2014, on the "Palestinian Media Center" account on "X." The accompanying caption at that time stated, "the spokesperson for the Al-Qassam Martyrs Brigade, Abu Obeida, greets the crowds at a festival" in the city of Rafah near the Egyptian border. The circulated image on social media shows a masked man among several people who appear to be celebrating him and taking pictures. The spread of the image comes as the Israeli army intensifies its airstrikes and ground operations throughout the territory.
