Indian Rohan Bopanna made history by winning the ATP Finals at the age of 43, becoming the oldest player ever to triumph in this year-end championship. He and his partner Matthew Ebden defeated Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the group stage matches on Wednesday. Bopanna and his Australian partner won one match and lost another in the group, and their advancement to the semifinals will depend on the outcome of their match against Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski this Friday. The previous record for the oldest player to win a match at the finals was held by Canadian Daniel Nestor, who was 42 in 2014. Earlier this year, Bopanna was the oldest player to win a Masters tournament, which grants 1,000 points in the ATP standings, when he claimed the doubles title at Indian Wells alongside Ebden.
