Mexico Strengthens Measures to Curb Migration to the U.S.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that his government will enhance measures to reduce migration in an effort to assist the United States in dealing with the record numbers of individuals attempting to reach the U.S. border. The Mexican president spoke with his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, on Friday, agreeing on the need to implement more actions along their shared border due to the record numbers of migrants disrupting cross-border trade. López Obrador stated in a regular press conference, "What we agreed on is that we continue to work together." He added, "We have a proposal to strengthen our plans and what we have been doing." According to the United Nations, the number of people crossing the dangerous Darien Gap, located on the border between Colombia and Central America, has surpassed half a million this year, double the record number recorded last year.
