The Colombian Attorney General's Office announced on Saturday that "authorities have arrested Nicolas Petro, the son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, in relation to an investigation concerning charges of money laundering and illicit enrichment." Nicolas Petro, a politician in the Atlántico region, welcomed the investigation when it began in March, previously describing the accusations against him of receiving money from traffickers to include them in his father's peace efforts as baseless.
Daisuris del Carmen Vasquez, Nicolas Petro's ex-wife, was also detained on charges of money laundering and violation of personal data. Earlier this year, she told local media that two individuals accused of being involved in drug trafficking had given Nicolas money for his father's campaign.
President Petro stated on the platform "X," formerly known as Twitter, that it is painful for him to have his son imprisoned, but added that the Attorney General's Office has all the guarantees to proceed with the case according to the law. The Attorney General's Office indicated it will request a judge to issue a custody order for both Nicolas Petro and his ex-wife based on the charges against them.
