The lawyer for former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy stated on Monday that "the player has filed a lawsuit against the Premier League club over the non-payment of his salary for nearly two years following accusations of sexual offenses in 2021." The former French international has brought a claim for "millions of pounds" in an employment tribunal seeking to recover financial entitlements until the end of his contract, which expired in June with the English champions.
A British court acquitted Mendy of two counts of rape and attempted rape last July. In January, Mendy was found not guilty of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Mendy's lawyer, Nick De Marco, confirmed in a statement sent via email to Reuters that he "has filed a case for millions of pounds due to unlawful deductions from his financial entitlements." He added, "Manchester City has not paid Mr. Mendy any wages since September 2021 after he was accused of various offenses, all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, up until the end of his contract in June 2023."
