Iranian television reported that gunmen from the Baloch community attacked a police station in the southeast of the country early on Friday morning, resulting in the deaths of 11 security personnel and injuring several others. Official media added that several members of the extremist group Jaish al-Adl were also killed in clashes that followed the attack in the town of Rask in the impoverished Sistan and Baluchestan province. The majority of the province’s population, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, are Sunni Muslims. The area has long been a hotspot for recurring clashes between security forces and Sunni militants, as well as drug traffickers.
