Sweden: Iran Detained One of Our Citizens

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Monday, that a Swedish man in his twenties was arrested in Iran earlier this month and is currently in custody. They declined to disclose any further details about the arrest. Relations between Sweden and Iran have been tense since 2019, when Stockholm arrested a former Iranian official for his role in mass executions and torture of political prisoners in the 1980s. The ministry told Reuters via email, "The embassy in Tehran is in contact with local authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the relatives of the detainee in Sweden." Iran has begun the trial of the Swedish citizen Johan Floderus, an employee of the European Union who has been imprisoned since April 2022. He is accused of espionage on behalf of Israel and "corruption on earth," a crime punishable by death. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson demanded the immediate release of Johan Floderus on December 11 of last year.
