Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received a phone call today, Saturday, from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The official spokesperson for the presidency, Advisor Ahmed Fahmy, stated that "the call discussed the regional situation, particularly in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian territories, in light of the politically and humanitarian crisis." Sisi presented Egypt's efforts and communications aimed at pushing for a ceasefire to protect civilians and prevent further deterioration of the tragic humanitarian conditions faced by the residents of the Gaza Strip.
Both Presidents Sisi and Putin agreed to continue serious efforts to achieve a ceasefire and emphasized the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities in this regard. They highlighted the importance of international cooperation to reach a fair and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue based on a two-state solution and recognizing the Palestinian state in accordance with pertinent international resolutions.
For his part, Putin thanked Sisi for his assistance in "evacuating Russian citizens from Gaza and delivering Russian humanitarian aid to the war zone there," and wished him success in the upcoming elections.
