Shoygu Inspects Russian Troop Group in the Arctic Region

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today, Saturday, that "Minister Sergey Shoygu inspected remote garrisons of the Northern Fleet in the Arctic region." The statement further clarified that "Shoygu examined the organization of service and the execution of tasks assigned to the special units deployed in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, including their readiness to work on protecting and defending vital sites." The central testing ground was established in 1954, and from 1954 to 1990, it witnessed 132 tests of nuclear weapon explosions in the atmosphere, underground, and underwater. The total yield of those explosions accounted for 94% of the yield of all nuclear explosions conducted by the Soviet Union.
