The Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi criticized what occurred in the last session held by the Parliament to elect a new president of the republic, stating, "How can we accept the farce that took place in the presidential election session where the constitution was violated in cold blood?" He added, "How can we, with our people who are deeply affected by these crises, accept the farce that happened in the presidential election session last Wednesday, after eight months of vacuum and waiting, where the constitution and democratic system were coldly violated, and the wound of division expanded, at a time when Lebanon needs to strengthen internal unity? Is this how we celebrate the centenary of Lebanon, characterized by the covenant of coexistence between Christians and Muslims, public freedoms, democracy, and cultural and religious pluralism in unity? Is this how we strip Lebanon of its exemplary qualities and remove its message in its Arab environment? Every official must return to prayer and stand in the presence of God with humility, repentance, and acknowledgment of personal mistakes, in order to correct his error and view the needs of the state and citizens from a different perspective."
