The famous American MQ-9 drone first took flight in 2001, but it captured media attention today after reportedly crashing in the Black Sea "after being struck by a Russian fighter jet," according to claims from the Pentagon. The MQ-9 Reaper has been successfully used by Americans to carry out precision strikes. In 2010 in Afghanistan, Egyptian al-Qaeda leader Mustafa Abu al-Yazid was killed by such a drone strike. Its highest achievement in combat use was the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guard, with a precision missile in early 2020 in Iraq. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that an American MQ-9 Reaper drone was heading towards Crimea over the Black Sea when it lost altitude and crashed, clarifying that two Russian fighters were dispatched to intercept it but did not shoot it down.
