Image on the Internet Ends the Life of a Pakistani Girl

The Pakistani police reported today, Monday, that they are investigating the murder of an 18-year-old girl after village elders demanded her killing due to her appearance in a photo on social media. This represents the latest victim of what is known as honor killings in Pakistan. The police indicated that the girl was killed after a tribal council in the village, known as Jirga, ordered her and a friend who appeared with her in the photo to be killed. Some relatives of the deceased girl are among the suspects.

Masood Khan, Deputy Inspector of Police in the Koly Palas area of northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border, stated, "Villagers shot one of the girls while the police saved the other." The caretaker Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (the northwestern border area), Syed Irshad Hussain Shah, confirmed that he had ordered the police to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.
