Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Friday in a statement that the Democratic Republic of the Congo will move its embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Netanyahu announced, after meeting with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, that Israel also intends to open an embassy in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are only a few embassies in Jerusalem, while most countries maintain their diplomatic presence in Tel Aviv, the main economic center of Israel. Israel considers Jerusalem to be its indivisible capital and wants all embassies to be based there, but most countries do not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the entire city and believe its status should be resolved through negotiations. Palestinians are calling for the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, which Israel occupied during the 1967 War.
