Details of the Death of Former Iraqi Sunni Waqf President Saad Kambish

After the announcement by Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari today, Thursday, regarding the arrest of former Sunni Waqf president Saad Kambish in Mosul, a subsequent joint statement from the Ministries of Interior and Health confirmed Kambish's death, stating it was due to "exhaustion during his pursuit and that he arrived at the hospital deceased." The statement continued: "Kambish's body has been referred to forensic medicine, and a committee has been formed to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death."

Kambish escaped from his detention center in the Green Zone last Tuesday after a visit. The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief, Major General Yahya Rasool, stated: "After Deputy Asma Hamid Kambish's visit to the police station at iftar time and her departure, the convict escaped with the assistance of three people from behind the center and reached two cars that were waiting to secure his escape to an unknown location." Following his escape, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani decided to dismiss the commander of the special forces, Major General Hamid Al-Zaheri, from the Karada Mariam police station, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Kambish was arrested in March from his home in Baqubah following a decision issued by the Federal Integrity Commission on charges of committing financial violations amounting to about $100 million, stemming from allegations of manipulation in the construction of mosques, minarets, and hotels, for which he had received a court ruling of four years in prison.
