The province of Alberta has withdrawn its support for the Calgary/Edmonton-centered bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, effectively ending any chance for the multi-sport event to return to Canada for the centennial celebration. The Commonwealth Sport Organization of Canada stated, "We believe that the recent decision by the Victorian government to withdraw from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games was a significant factor in Alberta's decision, as well as the overreliance on taxpayer support for the planning and execution of the event." They expressed their "great disappointment" in the Alberta government's decision but respect their right to make such a choice. This decision represents another setback for the Commonwealth Games Federation after Hamilton and Ontario, which hosted the inaugural games in 1930, suspended their bid, and the Australian state of Victoria withdrew last month from hosting the 2026 Games due to exceeding expected costs. The Alberta government had allocated up to two million dollars, along with an additional one million dollars from the City of Edmonton, for a feasibility study for hosting the games.
