Australian police have charged a man with armed robbery after he allegedly threatened the mother of tennis player Nick Kyrgios with a firearm before stealing his car.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported, citing local court documents, that the 32-year-old suspect appeared in court today to face five charges, including failing to comply with police orders to stop and driving while suspended. Bail was denied.
In a statement released yesterday, Monday, police said they received a report that a man had threatened a woman with a firearm amid allegations of car theft. The statement added that "police established a cordon to apprehend the man."
Authorities arrested the suspect in Canberra and located the vehicle around 9 AM yesterday, about half an hour after the alleged crime occurred.
It was reported that the man aimed a gun at Norlila, Kyrgios' mother, and demanded the keys to his green Tesla. Furthermore, court documents indicated that Kyrgios assisted the police in tracking the car using the location tracking feature on his phone.
