UAE: Referral of 84 Defendants, Mostly from the Muslim Brotherhood, to State Security Court

The Attorney General of the UAE, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, ordered the referral of 84 defendants, most of whom are members of the Muslim Brotherhood in the UAE, to the Abu Dhabi Federal Appeal Court (State Security Court) to face charges for forming a secret organization aimed at committing acts of violence and terrorism on UAE territory. The defendants concealed this crime and its evidence prior to their arrest and trial in case number (17) of 2013 concerning state security.

Based on sufficient information and investigations, the UAE Attorney General ordered an inquiry into the facts of this crime and appointed a lawyer to assist each defendant. After nearly six months of research and investigation, leading to the unveiling of the crime's details and sufficient evidence, the Attorney General decided to refer the defendants to a public trial at the State Security Court, which is still ongoing. The proceedings have commenced with witness hearings, following the appointment of a lawyer for every defendant unable to retain legal counsel for their defense.
