Production Halted at Elephant Oil Field in Libya

A tribal leader and oil engineer in Libya confirmed to Reuters by phone that production at the Elephant oil field was halted today, Thursday. The tribal leader stated that the halt was in protest of the kidnapping of a former finance minister. The Elephant field, which has a production capacity of 70,000 barrels per day, is operated by the Mellitah Oil and Gas Company, a joint venture between the Libyan National Oil Corporation and the Italian company Eni. No comment has been issued from the corporation. The oil engineer mentioned that a number of protesters entered the field and forced employees to leave after the operations were stopped. It was announced that the elders and leaders of the Uzweya tribe in Libya intended to close oil fields and ports today, Thursday, if former finance minister Faraj Boumtari was not released.
