Iran Executes Protester Accused of Murder

The Mizan news agency, affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, reported that authorities executed a man today, Tuesday, accused of killing a police officer and injuring five others after running them over with a car during widespread protests that swept the country in 2022. The death of Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini while in police custody sparked months of anti-government protests, marking the largest demonstrations against the authorities in years. She had been arrested for allegedly violating the country's Islamic dress code. The agency stated, "Following the approval of the Supreme Court, the death sentence against the accused, Mohammad Qabdoulu, was carried out early this morning." In addition to the murder charge, Qabdoulu received another death sentence for "corruption on earth." However, Amnesty International stated that Qabdoulu's right to a fair trial was violated, and the Iranian judicial system did not take into account his bipolar disorder.
