The Alarm Phone service, active in rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, reported today, Sunday, that a boat carrying about 400 migrants became lost between Malta and Libya while it was taking on water. They stated, "We have the updated position of the people in distress in the SRR of Malta. They have run out of fuel and are scooping out the water that is entering with buckets. The 400 people cannot save themselves; the authorities must urgently assist them. Any delay could be fatal."
Alarm Phone noted that the passengers are in a state of panic and that some of them require medical care. They added, "The fuel has run out, and the boat's bottom is filled with water, while its captain has left, and there is no one on board who can steer it."
Alarm Phone clarified that the boat is currently in Malta's search and rescue area, but contact with the authorities in Malta has not been possible up to this time.
The organization Sea-Watch International tweeted that they are conducting search operations today for boats in trouble at sea, including the boat reported by Alarm Phone. They stated, "Today we are again in the air, searching for boats in distress. Including a boat with about 400 people on board, reported by @alarm_phone. The EU must finally take action and save lives!"
