A ban on the use or possession of nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," has come into effect in Britain today, Wednesday. Under this ban, authorities will punish those caught producing, supplying, or selling the substance with lengthy prison sentences. The substance, which induces feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and detachment from reality, has particularly spread among the youth. The government claims it leads to disruptive behaviors in society and poses health risks.
Police Minister Chris Philp stated, "The use of this substance in public places has long caused antisocial behavior, which has become a blight on communities, and it is something we will not accept." Under this new ban, those who misuse laughing gas repeatedly may face fines or imprisonment for up to two years, with the maximum prison term for trafficking the substance being doubled to 14 years.
However, the ban excludes its use for legitimate purposes, including healthcare, dentistry, and other industries. The government noted that there is no need to obtain licenses for such uses, but users must prove "legal possession" and that it is not for recreational use.
