The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, stated today, Friday, that "the deliberate and clear obstruction of relief agencies from safe access to war-torn Sudan may amount to a war crime." Turk said in his address to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva that Sudan has become a "real nightmare." He added that "the apparent deliberate obstruction of relief agencies from safe and unhindered access to Sudan constitutes a serious violation of international law and may reach the level of a war crime." He continued, "I again call on both warring parties to fulfill their legal obligations by opening humanitarian corridors immediately before more lives are lost." Turk noted that "with more than eight million forced to flee within Sudan and to neighboring countries, this crisis is turning the country upside down and severely threatening peace, security, and humanitarian conditions across the entire region."
