The Indian government announced today, Wednesday, that "nearly 60 people were hospitalized following an ammonia leak from a pipeline belonging to Coromandel International near its Ennore plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu." The report stated that individuals were hospitalized after experiencing difficulty breathing and eye irritation, with 52 cases still under observation.
The government noted: "The unit observed a drop in pressure in the pipeline around 11:45 PM, coinciding with the spread of a strong odor." The leak occurred as the fertilizer manufacturing unit was preparing to receive an ammonia shipment through its 2.5-kilometer long marine pipeline.
