Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced on Wednesday that she will swim in the Seine River before the upcoming Summer Olympics this year. The Seine has become suitable for swimming on average two out of three days during the summer, but Paris hopes to further improve water quality as the 2024 Olympics approach. The primary goal is to make the river clean enough for swimming by 2025, with the Olympics boosting these efforts, although sporting events in the Seine were canceled last year due to health standards not being met following heavy rainfall and sewage issues. Hidalgo stated during the New Year's celebration at the city hall, "We will swim in the Seine," inviting Marc Guillaume, head of the regional authority, to join her in this endeavor, "after more than 30 years since Jacques Chirac's promise." Former Paris Mayor Chirac had pledged to swim in the Seine "with witnesses" back in 1988. The open water and triathlon events during the Paris 2024 Olympics will take place in the Seine.
