Ministry of Environment Launches Project to Reduce Organic Pollutants

The Ministry of Environment has launched a new project titled "Reducing Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants Through Waste Management in a Circular Economy," during a workshop held today with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Interior, municipal unions in the targeted areas of the project, and international organizations. This project aims to reduce emissions of persistent organic pollutants resulting from the indiscriminate burning of waste by improving solid waste management in areas that have suffered for years from illegal dumps and burning in the provinces of Akkar, the South, and Nabatieh, in cooperation with municipal unions in these areas.

This project is part of the Ministry of Environment's efforts to implement a roadmap for solid waste management in Lebanon over the next three years, which was launched last July to save and regulate the solid waste sector. Its components are being implemented in collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and a number of international organizations and municipalities. This project will complement other initiatives that will cover all Lebanese regions, including Beirut, Metn, Bekaa, Baalbek, Mount Lebanon, and other areas. The Cabinet has approved the acceptance of a grant worth $8.58 million for the Ministry of Environment from the Global Environment Facility through the World Bank to implement the project over the next four years.
