The fourth-seeded Italian, Jannik Sinner, had a successful start at the Australian Open as he aims to win his first Grand Slam title during his career. He defeated Dutch competitor Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 to move on to the second round of the season's first Grand Slam tournament on Sunday.
Sinner shone at the end of 2023 when he reached the final of the ATP Finals and then led the Italian team to win the Davis Cup title. Today, his performance was a bit slow as he did not participate in any preparatory tournaments before the Australian Open.
Sinner, who reached the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park in 2022, broke his Dutch opponent's serve at the start of the first set on Rod Laver Arena and maintained his lead to take the set. The second set saw a back-and-forth battle before Sinner achieved a crucial break of serve to lead 6-5 and then secured the win.
In the third set, Sinner squandered four break points and lost his serve to fall behind 2-0, but he quickly regained his rhythm, overcame the deficit, and set up a matchup in the second round against Jiri Lehecka or Pedro Cachin.
