Updates on the Shooting Incident at the U.S. Embassy

The head military investigative judge, Fadi Sawan, issued an indictment against the detained Mohammad Mahdi Hassan Khalil, who is accused of repeatedly firing shots at the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces building in Beirut. He is also being pursued by the Public Prosecution in Mount Lebanon for firing at the entrance of the U.S. Embassy in Awkar on the night of September 20, 2023. Sawan charged Khalil with attempted murder under Article 549/201 of the Penal Code and suspected him of offenses under Articles 72 of the Weapons and Ammunition Law, as well as Articles 379 and 733 of the Penal Code, which pertain to carrying unlicensed weapons, vandalism, and rebellion against public authorities. The file, along with the detained individual, has been referred to the permanent military court presided over by Brigadier General Khalil Jaber to begin his trial.
