Turkey to Provide Maritime Security Support to Somalia

A Turkish defense ministry official announced today, Thursday, that "we will provide maritime security support to Somalia to help the African nation defend its territorial waters." Commenting on the details of the agreement, the official, who requested anonymity, stated that "Ankara has been training the Somali army for over ten years." He added that "the agreement aims to enhance defense cooperation between Turkey and Somalia." He continued, saying: "At Somalia's request, we will provide support in the area of maritime security, just as we have done in the fight against terrorism." He further stated, "We will assist Somalia in developing its capabilities and resources to combat illegal and irregular activities in its territorial waters." Earlier this month, Turkey and Somalia signed a defense and economic cooperation agreement during the visit of the Somali defense minister to Ankara.
