On the occasion of the holidays, the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces launched a traffic safety awareness campaign titled "Do Not Drink and Drive." This initiative began with interactive workshops to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, starting on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, in the areas of Mar Mikhael and Badaro, and on Thursday, December 29, 2022, in Jbeil and Batroun.
The campaign aims to enhance traffic culture among drivers, particularly regarding driving under the influence of alcohol, which is one of the main causes of deadly traffic accidents. A practical alcohol test, implemented by police in several countries, including the United States, was adopted. If a driver fails this test, a violation report will be filed against them. However, in this campaign, the Internal Security Forces have utilized the test as an awareness tool, allowing drivers to assess their ability to drive. The designated areas for nightlife serve as a constant reminder that driving is a responsibility and commitment, and drivers must always remain fully focused and aware to protect themselves and others.
It is noteworthy that, ideally, drivers should not be under the influence of alcohol in any capacity when driving, meaning that blood alcohol content should not exceed 0.5 g/L, according to Lebanese traffic law (approximately two drinks for women and three drinks for men). Alcohol negatively affects the senses and leads to poor judgment of physical and mental capabilities, slows response times, and restricts vision, causing sensitivity to light. The body typically requires between 3 to 5 hours to eliminate the effects of alcohol.
Additionally, on New Year’s Eve, the security forces will intensify their efforts by setting up traffic checkpoints to monitor drivers and conduct blood alcohol content tests. Reports will be filed against violators, and their vehicles will be impounded.
