Barcelona has won the La Liga title for the 27th time in its history and the first in four years after easily defeating city rivals Espanyol 4-2, thanks to a brace from Robert Lewandowski in the first half on Sunday. With four matches left in the competition, Barcelona has amassed 85 points from 34 games, 14 points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, a gap that cannot be bridged.
Barcelona had little time to celebrate as visitors were forced to leave the pitch quickly after the final whistle due to a pitch invasion by several Espanyol fans. The team will have to wait until next Saturday to celebrate the title with their supporters when they host Real Sociedad, currently in fourth place, at Camp Nou.
The victory was emotionally charged for captain Sergio Busquets, who announced last week that he will leave the Catalan club after 15 years at the end of the season. He told Movistar Plus: "I am happy, I think we had a great season and we sealed it today with a big win," emphasizing that "the team is cohesive, our formation is solid, and we have a strong defense, that’s how champions are built."
He expressed pride in what his team has achieved throughout the season, stating: "We enjoyed solidity and consistency and won matches we had to win, we didn’t drop many points, it was a remarkable season and I am very happy to finish my journey here in this way."
