The Swedish music streaming company Spotify is launching a limited beta version of a new service for watching full music videos, daring to enter a field dominated by YouTube for nearly two decades. The company announced that it will roll out the music video feature today, Wednesday, in a beta phase for premium subscribers in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya, as part of its efforts to grow its user base.
While aiming to reach one billion users by 2030, Spotify's new plan faces competition from Apple Music and Google's YouTube platform, which allows users to watch music videos for free. The company stated that the "beta launch will include a limited selection of music videos, including hit songs from global artists like Ed Sheeran, along with locally loved music like Alona."
In March, Spotify introduced a feature called "Clips," which are vertical videos lasting less than 30 seconds, uploaded directly to Spotify by artists.
