1904 - The International Football Federation (FIFA) was established in Paris.

1927 - Charles Lindbergh became the first pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, from Long Island, New York, to Paris.

1932 - Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, from Newfoundland to Ireland.

1969 - An American court sentenced Sirhan Sirhan to death, later commuted to life imprisonment in 1968, for the murder of Robert Kennedy.

1972 - The statue "Pietà" by Michelangelo of the Virgin Mary was damaged in Rome.

1989 - One million people, one-sixth of Hong Kong's population, demonstrated in support of the rebellious students in Beijing after authorities imposed martial law in the capital.

1991 - Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a bomb hidden in a flower bouquet during his electoral campaign in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

1996 - A Tanzanian ferry capsized on Lake Victoria near the western town of Mwanza. Of the 1,000 people on board, only 114 survived, making it the worst maritime disaster in East Africa.

2003 - An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck Algeria, including the capital and nearby cities, resulting in 2,251 deaths and 10,243 injuries.

2004 - New Zealander Chris Cairns achieved a world record in Test matches.

2006 - The Republic of Montenegro held a referendum on independence from Serbia.
