The Union of Workers and Employees of Electricité du Liban held a meeting today to discuss recent developments about the privatization of the electricity sector, focusing on a decree to transform Electricité du Liban into a public company.
This meeting led to the following statement: 'Referring to the meeting held with His Excellency Minister of Energy Joe Saddi on 27/7/2026, attended by the Electricité du Liban Union, Kadisha Union, and Litani Service Union, upon his request, His Excellency pledged not to implement the electricity sector policy paper without involving the unions in its amendments.'
The union has learned that the draft decree to convert the institution into a company will be presented by the Minister and his regulatory body to the Higher Privatization Council during a meeting scheduled for this week.
The union reiterates its firm rejection of Law 462/2002, which has remained unchanged for 24 years.
Any decree issued without amending the aforementioned law is considered null and void, as 'what is built on falsehood is false.'
Therefore, the union will keep its meetings open to monitor any developments and determine the necessary appropriate actions.'
