United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Monday for countries that decided to halt funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to reconsider their stance. Guterres stated in a press conference from the Jordanian capital, Amman, that UNRWA "is the way to provide life for civilians in Gaza." He noted that "investigations are still ongoing regarding accusations against elements of UNRWA in the October 7 attacks." He emphasized that "any military operation in Rafah means a humanitarian disaster," adding that "an agreement for a ceasefire must be reached, and all those detained in Gaza must be released." About 12 Western countries had suspended funding for UNRWA, but some of them, including Finland and Australia, announced the resumption of funding for the UN agency.
