Information Minister in the caretaker government, Ziad Makary, stated after a session of the Lebanese Cabinet at the Grand Serail, during consecutive meetings to discuss the draft law for the 2023 budget, that Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed that "the best option is to appoint a new governor for the Central Bank of Lebanon when circumstances allow, especially since it is the government's duty to ensure the functioning of public services."
Makary added, "We have a precise 48-hour deadline, meetings are ongoing, and the extension was not raised in the Cabinet session." He further stated, "There will be consecutive meetings regarding the budget, and ministers will provide proposals and observations."
Regarding the deputy governors of the Central Bank, he noted that they requested "to provide cover for lending to the government and to ensure salaries, and ministers emphasized the necessity of appointing a new governor for the Central Bank of Lebanon."
For his part, Mikati confirmed that the best option is to appoint a new governor for the Central Bank of Lebanon when circumstances permit, especially since it is the government's duty to ensure the functioning of public services.
Makary revealed that approval was given, outside the agenda, for the promotion of officer cadets to the rank of lieutenant effective from August 1, 2023, on behalf of the President of the Republic.
