Uganda has distanced itself from the opinion of its judge at the International Court of Justice, Julia Sebutinde, which contradicts the court's ruling in the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel, stating that her remarks do not reflect Uganda's position. The Ugandan government issued a statement late Saturday saying, "Judge Sebutinde's position represents her personal and independent opinion and does not in any way reflect the position of the government of the Republic of Uganda."
It added that the government supported the stance of the Non-Aligned Movement regarding the conflict, which was taken during its summit in the Ugandan capital earlier this month. The Non-Aligned Movement countries condemned in a statement issued at the conclusion of their summit the Israeli military operations and the killing of civilians, also calling for an immediate ceasefire and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance. Sebutinde is one of only two judges who issued dissenting opinions, while 15 judges voted in favor of emergency measures that included most of South Africa's requests in this case.
