UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called today, Monday, for a "ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as well as the conflict in Sudan, with the beginning of the month of Ramadan." He also urged the release of hostages held by Hamas and to eliminate "all obstacles preventing the rapid and large-scale delivery of lifesaving aid" to Gaza, where the UN warns that a quarter of the population is on the brink of famine. Guterres told reporters: "International humanitarian law is in a deplorable state." He added: "The threat of an Israeli attack on Rafah could push the people of Gaza into deeper hell."
