Bouchikian on the Flooding of the Beirut River: Addressing the Root Problem

Minister of Industry in the caretaker government, George Bouchikian, confirmed that "the encroachments on public river properties, exemplified by the Beirut River, are the primary reason for the exploitation and constriction of waterways and outlets, which has turned floods into a disaster for residential areas, commercial establishments, and the industrial zone in Bourj Hammoud." He added, "This abnormal situation can no longer be overlooked. A emergency task force is required to address this issue, consisting of representatives from ministries, the Council for Development and Reconstruction, the Higher Relief Commission, and the relevant municipalities. The losses are significant and impact both citizens and the economy alike. It is time to put a definitive end to the root problem, expand the outlet, reinforce the walls on both sides of the river, and expedite the removal of sediments, waste, and debris from the river's outlet."
